Back in 2003, two friendly Newcastle neighbours (a high school teacher and a statistician) came up with an idea over a few drinks; a music event, but different. The music would be great of course, but it would also be something that the local community could be part of. It would be an event for everyone, serviced by local groups, with the main focus being on fun, connection and affordability.
Fast forward to Saturday 24 April 2005, Groovin the Moo’s first show and inaugural year. After setting up at the Gloucester Showgrounds (NSW), 1,400 people streamed through the gates to see the Screaming Jets, Killing Heidi, Evermore, Grinspoon and a bunch of local Newcastle bands. What a special moment, seeing your idea come to life.
Groovin the Moo returned in 2006, taking to Maitland (NSW), Albury (NSW) and Darwin (NT) and featured its very first International act, Gomez (UK) alongside Aussie legends Hilltop Hoods, The Herd, Faker and more.
After only just two years, in 2007, Maitland GTM saw its first sell-out show, with Silverchair and The Black Keys (USA) headlining. This same year, GTM visited Albury one more time with the likes of Grinspoon, Sneaky Sound System and Xavier Rudd.
In 2008, Maitland sold out again. GTM also got to see how much Northern Queenslanders loved to party when the show went to Townsville (QLD) bringing along The Presets, The Potbelleez and Spiderbait.
The GTM family grew in 2009 and expanded to Bendigo (VIC) in addition to returning to Maitland and Townsville, but it didn’t stop there. In 2010, two new shows were added – Bunbury (WA) and Canberra (ACT). With an epic selection of bands always present on the bill, the team worked hard to deliver three weekends of magic and mayhem.
GTM didn’t slow down over the course of 2011, 2012 and 2013, focusing on ensuring that every show continued to grow and be bigger and better than the previous year. The hard work paid off, with the line up continuing to grow and the events selling out nationally each year.
In 2014, long-laid plans of expanding into the Adelaide Hills region (SA) came to life as GTM took to Oakbank. The following years, 2015 and 2016 saw the tour continue at this pace, touring across five states and a territory over three weekends, each year!
In 2017, South Australians descended on Wayville, making the state’s agricultural Showground the new home for their local GTM. 2018 provided the opportunity to consolidate and reflect on how the music, culture and community of each region is knitted together to form the rich tapestry that is a GTM show.
In 2019, we welcomed a “commoonity” far and wide from across the world. With both local and international acts, patrons and team members, GTM is always a time to remember. We found a new home in the ACT and gave ourselves a fresh start in an established venue!
After two years of being away, patiently waiting out the pandemic in a paddock, it’s time for Groovin the Moo to start on the path of regenerating the festival, reconnecting with our regions and rejoicing with our GTM community – and by community, we mean our patrons, artists, team members, suppliers and stakeholders.
It’s been quite the journey so far and we love the fresh energy that our GTM community brings to this festival, all eager to grow something of their own.
We can’t wait to see you at Groovin the Moo, 2022.

ATMs and EFTPOS
We do provide ATM facilities on site but they tend to be quite popular. All bars will have PayWave just in case you run out of or forget to grab some cash.
EFTPOS facilities are at the discretion of the individual food, beverage and market stall suppliers.
Patrons 18 years of age and over are permitted to buy alcohol at GTM, provided you bring valid photo ID with you. We’ll have a range of beverages for you to choose from including all your favourite beers, ciders and spirits. There will also be a range of non-alcoholic beverages including soft drinks, juice and flavoured milk available for purchase from outlets around the event.
GTM loves to keep Australia beautiful and will be running a recycling program at our bars.
In 2022, our GTM shows will welcome Red Frogs to assist us with providing care to you, our beloved patrons. If you need to recharge or chill out, there will be volunteers roaming our festival sites to be a friendly face or to offer a helping hand.
First Aid tents will be in operation from GTM’s start to finish and is the place to go if you or one of your friends aren’t feeling well. Not sure what’s wrong? Or think maybe you just need a rest? Better to be on the safe side and talk to our First Aid operators – they’ll be able to help or send you along to someone else who can.
GTM will have a diverse selection of mouth-watering catering options to give you the sustenance you need to make it through until the end of the night! You will find something to cater to all tastes from sweet to savoury, from local providers to festival favourites (yes, that includes gozleme), a delicious selection of international flavours and a number of vegetarian and vegan options too!
If you have specific dietary requirements, we do recommend you play it safe and bring along some snacks to get you through in case our caterers can’t meet your needs.
Information – The Helpdesk
The Helpdesk is back again this year to help answer any questions you have throughout the day. Look for the Helpdesk sign and head over to talk to the friendly team who can help you with free water, sunscreen, maps, lost and found, playing times or if you just want to have a chat.
Lost and Found
The Helpdesk is the place to be a good egg and hand in any lost items you may have found at the event, or to see if a fellow good egg has handed in an item that you may have lost!
Items not collected at the end of the night: Will be retained at the event site by GTM for one (1) day post event. Check back in on your relevant GTM Facebook Event Page after your event for collection details.
Every GTM event has a range of market stalls providing opportunities for local artists and business owners to get involved and showcase their wares.
Bands will be selling their merch and there will be an exclusive range of GTM goodies available on the day.
Our Mootiques have been set up with those little bits and pieces you may need to freshen up throughout the day, and the best bit is it’s all free.
On a day full of sunshine and dancing it’s very important to keep hydrated. We are more than happy for you to bring a sealed or empty plastic water bottle to GTM.
We offer free water stations across the festival site for you to fill up your bottles throughout the day. Please note; soft drink, juice, milk, energy drinks, flavoured water and sports water are not permitted to be brought into the festival.
Groovin the Moo welcomes everyone and we are constantly working on ways to improve the festival experience for all. Here are some things that might be useful for you to know before you arrive.
We have a designated accessible parking area for our patrons – please check the map for the exact location. This parking area is automatically available for any vehicle bearing a standard Disability Parking Permit – just follow the Accessible Parking signs once you enter the car park.
We are aware that some disabilities are of a more temporary nature and if you don’t have an official sticker and need to use the Accessible Parking area, we invite you to let us know when you arrive. Drop the GTM Ticketing team a line to arrange this.
We understand that equal access can sometimes mean being accompanied by a carer, and we offer complimentary carer/companion tickets on an individual needs basis. If you’d like to chat to us about this, just send an email to the GTM Ticketing team so we can begin the conversation.
We understand that equal access can sometimes mean being accompanied by an Assistance Animal. To help us support you and your Assistance Animal on site, please email the GTM Ticketing team.
INSIDE THE FESTIVAL
Accessible toilets can be found within the festival grounds at each toilet area and will be marked clearly on the patron map. There are 3 toilet areas; one near Moolin Rouge, one near the Outdoor Stages and one near the main catering area. There is also an accessible toilet in the Udder Mayhem bar. These toilets will be managed by our friendly team who will be able to open them for you on request.
There will be viewing platforms at the Outdoor stages. The viewing platforms are solely for the use of our accessibility patrons plus one other. Chairs are not provided on the platforms. Please note customers using large scooters will be asked to park these at the bottom of the Viewing Platform ramps when possible to ensure we can accommodate as many access customers on the platforms as we can.
We are happy to assist people with accessibility requirements in making plans for a pleasant and safe festival experience. Please get in touch with the GTM Ticketing team to ensure that your day is as enjoyable as possible.
